RemoteWebDriverServer question?
« on: April 11, 2012, 01:56:27 PM »
Sorry that I couldn't understand the concept of RemoteWebDriverServer.
I've refered to the Server and Client code here:
Where should I run the server code ? If I run it on my machine, it
starts the server on my localhost.
But I want it to start the remote selenium server automatically on
 remote machine.
(and want to avoid manual start of java –jar selenium-
So, in both server code and client code above, nowhere we are
mentioning the IP Address of remote machine ?
How will the server automatically run on remote machine?
This might be a basic question.again rephrasing the requirement:
 1) Currently I run the test code on my Mac and execute tests on
 Windows machine - ie8
 2) on my windows machine, I need to start the server manually: java –
 jar selenium-server-standalone-2.0b3.jar
I want to automate step 2) such that whenever I start tests on my Mac,
my remote Windows machine starts the server automatically by using
some code on Local machine (Mac) .

For you to run any program on a remote computer you need some form of
communication. If the Selenium Server is running on the Windows
computer the RemoteWebDriver can communicate with the Selenium Server.
However, if the Selenium Server is not running something has to
communicate with the remote computer to start it. RemoteWebDriver was
designed to communicate with a Selenium Server.
What I would recommend is using the concept of remotely running a
program on a remote computer. With UNIX/Linux you can always use ssh
or rexec to run an application on a remote computer. With Windows
there is no secure communications. You'll either have to install ssh
or something similar. You can then use that remote communication to
execute the command "java -jar selenium-server-standalone.jar".
Personally, I set up my Windows machine such that when I start it up
it automatically runs a script to start the Selenium Server. I
actually have a Windows image I run with VirtualBox. When I start the
image it is set to automatically log me in and my Startup folder has a
script to run the Selenium Server. When I want to test with IE I just
start the Windows image then run my tests from my Mac.

Thanks for the response, Darrell.
That clears my understanding that RemoteWebDriverServer automatically
starts selenium server on remote machine.
